In spite of navigation being probably the single greatest challenges to underwater operations, development has tended to emphasize the vehicle before the sensors. Traditionally for divers, sensor and navigation systems were subsystems of an SDV (Swimmer Delivery Vehicle), or merely optional add-ons. Many smaller DPVs (Diver Propulsion Devices, hand-held SDVs) has virtually no instrumentation making long range missions underwater unviable. A brief history of the Enigma code and the pre-war cracking of it
Like a lot of pople I find Enigma and codebreaking fascinating, so I could not resist X-POSTing this from a computer programer's blog. This guy actually built his own virtual Enigma and then cracked it programatically using modern computing power(!!!!)...
A lot of people now think that Alan Turing cracked the Enigma. A lot of people like to correct those people and say that it was the Poles who truly cracked the Enigma. So we really need to correct everyone and set things straight, because it was far more nuanced than that, with far more people involved, and different versions of Enigma were cracked even earlier.
